“This collection of pieces are like a tapestry of textures, the elements of chance and juxtaposition playing a main role here. Random snippets of recordings of percussion improvisations, found sounds and object manipulations, looped and layered across each other like patchwork; the sounds and timbres rolling around among each other, creating textural Imperfections that I found exciting. I also left the sequencing of the track titles imperfect, to reflect the nature of the pieces.” - Matt Atkins

Sound and visual artist based in London, Matt Atkins works with percussion, valuing the meticulousness of contact. His musical adventures have been published by a number of labels that share his taste for instant acousmatic music: Grisaille, tsss tapes, Tone Burst, Dasa Tapes, falt, Complex Holiday, etc. Since 2021, he has participated in the emulation of this scene via his label Minimal Ressource Manipulation on which he invites artists from various horizons to reinterpret this minimalist and elementary relationship to music.
On Imperfections, we find Matt Atkins' obsession with stochastic musical phenomena. The percussive elements adopt gyratory inflections and this ambivalent conglomerate tries to find its own construction. By a subtle play of distances, the artist places the sounds. The listener, a stakeholder in this sound complex, enjoys an intimate relationship with the compositions as in "Sixth" where the rubbed, shaken and scraped objects offer both a reference point and a counterpoint to the aerial layer that settles in.
An intuitive relic of musique concrète, the magnetism of the tapes merges with the reciprocal influence that operates between the sounds. The latter attract and repel each other in the ballet of the loop. In "Ninth", the deep timbre of a Tibetan bowl is in tune with the clashing of shepherds' bells. The bronze of which they are made assimilates both the roundness and the brilliance of the sound spectrum. In Imperfections, the music is tuned to the time of a resonance that does not want to run out of steam.
Thus Matt Atkins invites us to tame our sound environment, random and capricious by nature, and to let ourselves be carried by the flow of this nascent musicality. In one of his poems, the Romanian poet Gellu Naum writes: "It seems that at the end of the silence circulates a disorder caused by the desert of the world. Imperfections is one of those albums that accompanies the listener beyond the silence, in a heterotopia of its own where music is the arcane of a forgotten world.
